Sarlahi, June 27 (RSS): The locusts have entered Lalbandi in the district. They were found in the farm of Oil Seeds Research Centre of Lalbandi Municipality-2 today. Swarm of some 1,000 locusts was spotted in the farm, said officiating chief of Agriculture Knowledge Centre, Devanand Ray Yadav.

"While visiting the field this morning, the vermin was eating various crops including rice seedlings and peanut," said senior scientist at Centre, Dr Bisheshor Prasad Yadav, adding that the grasshopper like insect might have entered Nepal via India Friday night.

With the vermin spreading in the farm, the farmers here have been worried.

Initially traced in Africa, the locusts gradually migrated to Arabian countries, then to Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. This is the first time the locusts were traced in Nepal on Saturday, said the Centre.

The scientists have warned that the locusts damage crops hundred times more than the fall army worms.  The insects migrating in tens of thousands of number destroy green leaves and stalks in short time. It can damage the crops spreading in more than 150 km in a single day.

Yadav informed that they would identify its species and study the nature of damage soon. Technical team has been mobilized for the study, he added.
